“Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one,” is from the Old Testament, Book of Creation, Deuteronomy 6:4. I have written this prayer, one of the most important in the Jewish religion, over the panorama of Jerusalem. The energy of one God permeates the spirit of Jerusalem. The three religions (Christianity, Islam, and Judaism) share this concept of one God and are all at home in Jerusalem. Yellow symbolizes light and wisdom, orange is energy, red is love, violet is death, and blue is spirituality.

This picture combines one of the most holy symbols of Judaism, the remainder of the West Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall) of the Temple of Jerusalem, together with the Islamic Mosque on the Temple Mount. Over the centuries the Temple Mount has been the place of intense tensions between these two monotheistic religions. “Is there not one Father of us all? Did not one God create us?” is from the Old Testament, Book of the Prophet Malachi (Malachi 2:10). Red symbolizes love, yellow is light and wisdom, green is life, and blue is spirituality.

“Beloved, the One creates for us models, signs, symbols, parables everywhere we look to remind us of our Source. And the One behind all understands and embraces all – the past and future journey of everything from the seed to star.” This is the “Verse of Light” from the Qur’an (Sura 24:35). In this picture a boy from the Arabic quarter of Jerusalem is leaving school. What can he see? How will his life be molded? Red is the color of love, and yellow is light and wisdom.

A schoolgirl in the Arabic quarter of Jerusalem stands between the past and the future. Which will she choose – the modern way or traditional way of life? Everything is possible in Jerusalem. It is possible for everything to co-exist in a small space at the same time – all possible religions and ways of life peacefully living amongst each other. The alternative is high tension among them. Yellow symbolizes light and wisdom, red is love, blue is spirituality.

A Jewish boy celebrates his Bar Mitzvah with his family at the West Wall. At thirteen years old he is happy and excited to become responsible, in Jewish tradition and Law, for his own actions. Now it is his choice on how he will make his own life and how it affects those around him. Yellow symbolizes light and wisdom, and red is love.

A woman prays in the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth, where Mary, mother of Jesus, received the happy message from the Angel Gabriel that she would bear God’s Son. The woman desires to be heard in the divine realm, wanting to receive messages of peace and love. Today, Nazareth is the largest Arab city in Israel, but some Christians and Jewish people also live peacefully together there. Yellow symbolizes light and wisdom, red is love.

Female Jewish soldiers praying at the Western Wall before being dispatched to war in order to defend the state of Israel. They are normal teenagers, afraid of dying, but nevertheless dedicating their life for their Homeland. They fight for their right to live their lives how they wish, and the right for their people to live in peace. Can war bring peace? Yellow symbolizes light and wisdom, red is love.

The Arab Quarter of the old city of Jerusalem. This place, with all its stalls, noises, and smiles, was a spiritual and emotional experience for me. A recognition of the past, and a vision of the future. I recognized myself as part of the family with the people of Jerusalem and decided to do everything possible to contribute to peace in this country. Red is love, yellow is wisdom, green is life, and blue is spirituality.

A baptism in the river Jordan, at the location where St. John baptized Jesus Christ. People come from all over the world to be baptized here. Not just from Europe and the Americas, but also Christians from Asia. This ritual makes them a part of the Christian religion, and the teachings of Jesus of peace and forgiveness on earth. Yellow symbolizes light, red is love, and blue is spirituality

“There is one Lord, one faith, and one God and Father of all, over all…” This is from the New Testament, Ephesians 4:5-6. I wrote it on the picture of the Tomb of Abraham, the father of the three monotheistic religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The tomb is in the Cave of the Patriarchs in the city of Hebron on the West Bank, an area of Palestine with intense military tension. Blue symbolizes spirituality.

The picture shows the Temple Mount, a sacred place for Jewish people, Muslims, and Christians. The Wailing Wall (also known as the Western Wall) was the site of the great Temple of Jerusalem, the holiest place in Judaism. For Muslims the Mosque on the Temple Mount is the site of the prophet Muhammad’s journey to heaven as described in the Qur’an. For Christians it is a place connected to Jesus Christ. Red symbolizes love, yellow is light and wisdom, green is life, and blue is spirituality.

The Church of the Resurrection or the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on Mount Golgotha in Jerusalem was built over the Temple of Venus (Aphrodite in Greek). I was amazed to discover that the Christian religion of love and forgiveness was connected to the location of the Goddess of Love. While recovering from a life threatening situation in 1990 I had a vision of this place and painted it from that dream. Yellow symbolizes light and wisdom, and red is love.

In the very tight space that Jerusalem is, all religions can peacefully co-exist with one another. Behind the dome lie Coptic orthodox monastery cells. The Coptic Egyptian community is one of the very oldest of Christianity. The oldest religion of the One God and Unity was cultivated by the Egyptian Pharaoh Echnaton and became the root of the monotheistic religions. Red symbolizes love, yellow is light, green is life, and blue is spirituality.

The current situation in Jerusalem, the city of One God and Unity, is unfortunately very explosive. Even though now, on the streets of Jerusalem, it may seem there is respect, peace, and understanding, the roofs of the houses in the old city are lined with wires to separate the Jewish people and the Arabs. Yellow symbolizes light, red is love which in seconds can change as the colors of war.

This picture is the ancient city of David, with a panorama of the Mount of Olives, within which contains one of the world’s largest Jewish cemeteries. On the left of the picture is the Mosque. The painful memories of history past and current are present in Israeli life. The colors of the rainbow symbolize the presence of God and Divine Energy which exists in the past, present, and future.

As I visited the Church of the nativity in Bethlehem on the West Bank, I found that, due to a dangerous military situation, I was the lone visitor. The grotto where Jesus was born seems to be the most quiet and peaceful place on earth. It was very touching as in the Russian Orthodox Church above the grotto the monk sang just for me. Rainbow colors symbolize divine presence.

The picture captures the tension and danger of the moment on a Hebron street, city of the Patriarch on the West Bank. It is a paradox of how love and death can exist at the same time. The soldier came to me and said very seriously that his people are losing position on the next street and that he could not protect me any longer. Then he smiled and asked, “What is your name? What is your telephone number? I am also from Russia.”

This is territory of the Vatican in the Kapernaum on the Sea of Galilee, a place of the preaching, healing, creation, and wonders of Jesus Christ. In the back is the ruin of the Synagogue of Jesus Christ. “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” is the wish of the people in the Middle East. Unity instead of separation. But Unity is only possible with compassion, understanding, and respect of other people’s traditions and cultures. As we know, there exists deep common roots between the religions. Blue symbolizes spirituality and orange is energy.

This is architectural detail of the Synagogue of Jesus Christ in the Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee. He preached in the Synagogue. Many Christians today do not even realize that he was Jewish. I am very glad that today Christianity and Judaism have no more painful conflicts, and that sad part of history is over. Blue symbolizes spirituality, forgiveness, and respect.

“God created man in his own image,” are the words from Genesis. It was a Greek idea that not only mind, but also the body of man, is divine. I took this picture of a marble torso located at the past residence of Pontium Pilates in the city of Cesarea. I believe everyone is a part of a divine energy. It is impossible to kill someone in the name of God, because we are all a part of God. Red symbolizes the color of love.

Kabbalah is a mystical part of Judaism which believes that in the city of Patriarch, in Hebron, close to the Tomb of Abraham, is the location where Adam and Eve were cast to after leaving the Garden of Eden. On the picture of the palm tree of this sacred place I drew the figures of Adam and Eve. I believe that we are living in the Paradise that is on earth right now. We just have to love and respect each other, and every moment in life. Yellow symbolizes light and wisdom, blue is spirituality, and green is life.

This picture is the temple of the Baha’i, a religion of Unity. The Baha’i faith is a monotheistic religion emphasizing the spirituality of all humankind. Humanity is understood to be in a process of collective evolution, and the need of the present time is for the gradual establishment of peace, justice, and unity on a global scale. I was very surprised to find the main temple of the Baha’i religion in the middle of Haifa, in Israel. This is a large show of tolerance.

“Thou shalt love they neighbour as thyself,” is found in the New Testament (Matthew 20:39). We can love and respect the people around us very easily by recognizing a part of ourselves in them. It was a good feeling to see a friendly and very funny conversation between an Arab maker of pomegranate juice and a Jewish tourist in Akko, a city with a great Crusades castle. Unity and peace are possible. It’s up to us to make it happen.

An amazing picture of old men playing backgammon on a street in the Arab Quarter of the old city of Jerusalem. I see it as very symbolic. Unity is possible. There are rules in the Unity game, and by learning these rules we can win. But we must all have the goal of peace for humanity. Love can win over hate, life over death, compassion over judgement, and peace over war. The colors of the rainbow symbolize the divinity of the moment.
